SYDNEY, N.S. — It may seem like the season of endless storms but that’s not keeping local entertainers and partygoers at home, with plenty of concerts, events and new releases scheduled over the next few weeks.

There’s everything from new theatre productions, theme days and even appearances from several well-known entertainers. For an impartial list of what’s coming (because there’s always something missing from a list - apologies in advance), take a look and start making plans to get out of the house.

Friday, January 17

• Brian Cathcart and Colin Gillis of Pretty Archie will be at Governors, Sydney, 10 p.m.-1:30 a.m., performing original country, bluegrass and folk songs. $8 cover for this 19 and over event.

• Music on Tap at Breton Brewing, Keltic Dr., with Rob Murphy and Rusty James.

Saturday, January 18

• Human Missile Crisis/Vulpine/Rad & Subtract will be at Governor’s Pub, Sydney, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. $8 cover for this 19 and over event.

• Brandon Collier will perform at the Sydney Curling Club at 9 p.m. as part of the Curling Club’s first annual cash spiel. The spiel takes place from January 17-19 and is open to all forms of teams. Entry is $200 per team and with a guaranteed first prize of $1,000.

• It’s Star Wars Day at the McConnell Library. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., there will be Star Wars Themed crafts, Jedi training and the chance to win prizes.

• He’s best known as the lead singer from Blue Rodeo but Jim Cuddy will be performing with his own band at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, January 21

• The Songwriter Club will meet at The Hub Downtown, 208 Charlotte St., Sydney at 6 p.m. for youth songwriters and 7-8 p.m. for those older.

Thursday, January 23

• Now considered a classic film, “The Princess Bride” will be screened at the Highland Arts Theatre at 7 p.m. Admission is $7.

Friday, January 24

• Award-winning writer Bill Conall will host an evening of storytelling at the McConnell Library, from 6:30-8 p.m.

• Adam Baldwin with his band The Backstays will perform in the Centre 200 Concourse. Showtime is 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $30.

Saturday, January 25

• Governors will host New Draft’s Alpine Motion single release party from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Register online at http://cbrmrecreation.eventbrite.com.

• Robbie Burns Day featuring Robert Bouchard along with Jordan Musycsyn at Breton Brewing’s Tap Room, Keltic Dr., 8-10 p.m. The night will also feature the kickoff of the fifth annual Cape Breton Guitar Night campaign supporting Loaves and Fishes.

• Board game night at Doktor Luke’s, 6-10 p.m.

• Confidential Musical Theatre Project #12 at the Highland Arts Theatre, 8-10 p.m. Get to see a first rehearsal, dress rehearsal, opening night and closing night all in the span of two hours. And did we mention it’s a musical? Advanced tickets are $25 plus HST in advance and $32 plus HST the day of.

Sunday, January 26

• Highland Arts Theatre and the NFB present I am Skylar (& Other Atlantic Short Films) at the HAT at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Each screening will be following by a talkback with the creative team behind the films. Admission is pay-what-you-can at the door.

Tuesday, January 28

• The CBRM and the Port of Sydney are hosting a Taste of Winter Paint Night at the Port of Sydney, 74 Esplanade, Sydney. Learn introductory painting skills and go home with a masterpiece. Book early to get a spot at this free event. For more details go to www.tasteofwinter.ca

Saturday, February 1

• Fire Valley Fire II will be released at Breton Brewing. This event was rescheduled from the original December 21 event which was cancelled. If you have a ticket from the December 21 show, it can be used but if you can’t make it, return the ticket for a refund. The night will also feature Carmen Townsend Band and Mhira Blood.

Sunday, February 2

• Head to the Cedar’s Club, 30 MacKenzie St., Sydney, 3-8 p.m., for a musical tribute and fundraiser for entertainer Sam Moon who recently underwent hip surgery replacement. Tickets are $20 at the door or from the Cape Breton Curiosity Shop, 306 Charlotte St, Sydney, Guests include Jinx O’Neil and Donnie Campbell, Ralph Dillon and Janet Bickerton, Duncan Wells, Joey Bennett Band, The Blues Merchants, Parker MacNeil, Hubba Parris and The Moon Unit, the Matt Minglewood Band and others. Hosted by Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison.
