ARCADIA -

A warm, dry temporary home for the Tri-County Roller Derby rec team – East Coast Beaches –means members can continue training, possibly for the entire winter or longer.

On Aug. 30, YARC president Mitch Bonnar announced that the team was temporarily renting the gymnasium in the former Arcadia school that Th’YARC just purchased.

League founder Roberta Lyons is ecstatic.

“It’s going to save the derby. I had two skaters leave because of the surface that we use outside.”

The women had been training at the paved outdoors Mariners Centre rink and at the Yarmouth high school bus loop.

The team started earlier this summer and has close to a dozen members.

Lyons is excited about the future.

“NSCC (Burridge) allowed me to put the derby brochure in all the new student packages so I expect to get an influx of new skaters there.”

The team has the new location for three months and if the space is still available after that, Lyons plans on renegotiating and continuing to rent.

“We’ll definitely always be looking for proper space because once the girls do get trained they’re going to want to have a bout and we need a regulation track for that,” she said.

“It’s great that we can help out Th’YARC as well to pay for their expenses when they’re not using it.”
