Sherrie Graham says the goal with her new blog is to bring all of her favourite things to the Internet - a visit and chat, a recipe to share and some images of someone's home in Nova Scotia.
“I want people to feel like they're there with us at the table and have all of the insider tips on how to make recipes,” the Wellington, Yarmouth County, resident said.
“My hope is that people will settle in and really enjoy each post and the particular personality that the featured person brings.”
Graham refers to friends interviewed for her blog as she typically addresses them, usually by first names only.
Each monthly instalment includes a podcast and her beautiful, light-infused photography, highlighting the preparation of each meal.
Her first visit was with her neighbour - Mrs. Trask - to document how she made her “soft and perfectly chewy” molasses cookies.
Vickie’s fring frang (potato galette) was featured next, prepared in a teahouse heated by a crackling fire in the wood stove.
Fring frang is a simple, hearty meal of fried potatoes and requires very little from the pantry. It’s traditionally made by Acadians in Clare and served with ketchup or bread and butter pickles.
There are also Alana’s lobster cakes and Jimmy’s shrimp & grits… so far…
Each interview is chock-full of helpful information and links to places or items of interest mentioned during the visit.
Graham enjoys the creative aspect of it all.
“I love organizing my thoughts into posts and sharing photos - it's good for my brain and heart,” she said.
Nova Scotia Kitchens celebrates people who continue with time-honoured ways of preparing food, an approach that Graham and her family adopted long ago.
“So much has changed over the past 100 years in the way that people live,” she said.
In addition to her full-time job, the satisfaction and enjoyment that she gets from doing things herself - keeping chickens, making soap and cooking - gives her energy and she finds it incredibly fulfilling.
Graham became interested in cooking while in university after finding a ginger chicken recipe online.
“When I sliced into my first knob of ginger, that was it. The scent was so incredible, and the flavour so intense and wonderful that I knew I had been missing out. I have been cooking and really enjoying food ever since.”
