BRIDGETOWN, N.S. — A 17-year-old Bridgetown girl is dead following a single-vehicle crash at Centrelea late Sunday evening, Feb. 3.
Annapolis District RCMP said the Honda Accord the girl was driving lost control approaching a bend, left the road, flipped, and hit a utility pole.
The driver was the sole occupant of the car that was heading east at the time of the crash that happened just before 7 p.m. A friend of the deceased was traveling behind her in another vehicle and witnessed the crash as the car began to slide, went out of control, and flipped.
The crash was reported via 911.
A retired police officer and some bystanders assisted until RCMP and other first responders arrived on scene, police said.
Bridgetown firefighters were called to the scene and extracted the injured girl from the vehicle and she was transported to Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton and later airlifted to the Halifax Infirmary where she was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m.
Highway 201 was closed in the area and traffic was diverted to Highway 101.
Police said although the weather was clear at the time, roads were slippery. An RCMP collision reconstructionist was called to the scene for evidence. The road was re-opened just before 6 a.m. today, Feb. 4. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
RCMP said their thoughts and prayers are with the family as they suffer this tragic loss.
