YARMOUTH, N.S. — Nomination meetings to select the Conservative candidate who will run for the West Nova seat in the next federal election are taking place Friday and Saturday.
The number 3 is a theme in this nomination process. There are three people seeking the nomination and three nomination meetings are being held.
Those seeking the nomination are Chris d’Entremont, Hannah Dawson-Murphy and Dan Mullen.
The dates and locations for the three nomination meetings are:
• Friday, June 21: Yarmouth Lion's Club, 87 Parade Street. Doors open at 6 p.m., call to order and speeches at 6:30 p.m. and voting from 7:15-8:30 p.m.
• Saturday, June 22: Annapolis Basin Conference Centre, 761 Broadway Ave, Cornwallis. Doors open at 10 a.m. Call to order and speeches at 10:30 a.m. and voting from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
• Saturday, June 22: Berwick and District Lions Club, 250 Veteran's Drive, Berwick (Exit 15 off Highway 101). Lion's Club is in the Kings Mutual Century Centre. Doors open at 3 p.m. Call to order and speeches at 3:30 p.m. and voting from 4:15-5:45 p.m.
The announcement of the results will be around 7 p.m. on June 22.
All members of the Conservative Party are invited to come to one of the venues to support the candidates. There is information about voting process requirements on the West Nova Conservative’s website.
Of the three people running, d’Entremont currently holds a seat in the Nova Scotia Legislature as the PC member for the Argyle-Barrington riding. Should d’Entremont be the successful candidate in the nomination process, he will eventually have to resign his seat and a by-election would later be required. D’Entremont said there has been clarification about when a resignation would be required from Legislative Council which stated, he says, as a MLA, "we still need to resign, but only after we become the candidate in the eyes of Elections Canada, which is when we submit after the writ is dropped."
The next federal election is scheduled to take place on or before Oct. 21 of this year. The Oct. 21 date is determined by the fixed-date procedures in the Canada Elections Act, however the Act does not preclude the Governor General of Canada – on the advice from the Prime Minister – from calling an election at an earlier date.
The Liberal party has already selected its candidate to run for the West Nova seat in the upcoming federal election. It will be Jason Deveau of Clare who won the nomination last month.
