SYDNEY - Police are investigating after a potentially explosive device was dropped off at the 4 Engineer Support Regiment camp in Sydney Tuesday afternoon.
Nobody was hurt and the device did not explode when it was left at the camp’s front gate at noon, but two soldiers provided witness statements to police. Both military and civilian police were present by the camp gate at time of writing and part of the base was cordoned off.
The explosive device, a projectile, is currently contained and a disposal expert is coming in Wednesday to dispose of it.
“If the public have any old ammunition or military ordnance they should not move it but call the police first,” said Staff Sgt. Reg Hutchings at Cape Breton Regional Police.
That way, police can cordon off the area while specialist RCMP or military bomb disposal teams are called in to safely dispose of any unexploded bomb, shell, or ammunition.
“4 Engineer Support Regiment is co-operating and supporting the Cape Breton Regional Police with their investigation,” said Captain Jamie Tobin.
The incident comes as the regiment takes part in Exercise Nihilo Sapper 2017, Atlantic Canada’s biggest annual military engineering exercise.
As part of their activities, troops are restoring a historic combat trail used by British soldiers during the siege of Louisbourg in the 1700s.
That way, police can cordon off the area while specialist RCMP or military bomb disposal teams are called in to safely dispose of any unexploded bomb, shell, or ammunition.
