The Law Enforcement Torch Relay completed its final leg of a cross-province journey with the Special Olympics Torch - The Flame of Hope - less than one hour ago in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
During the Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games opening ceremony, which got underway at 8 p.m. ADT at the St. F.X. Keating Centre, the flame will ignite the Special Olympics cauldron to officially launch the five-day national celebration of athletics.
The highly-anticipated opening – one organizers said will reflect Nova Scotia’s place as ‘Canada’s Ocean Playground’ – will wrap up at approximately 10 p.m.
More than 1,000 athletes will be amongst in excess of 4,000 visitors, including coaches, families, volunteers, and mission staff, who have arrived in Antigonish.
The athletics, friendship and fun will include competition in nine sports; athletics, soccer, swimming, basketball, powerlifting, bocce, rhythmic gymnastics, golf and softball, which will get underway Wednesday morning.
Events are free and open to the public.
The Games wrap up Saturday (Aug. 4).
