PICTOU, N.S.— A fire at the Advocate Printing plant located on the outskirts of Pictou has been brought under control.

The fire, which was in the building’s warehouse area was first detected at approximately 12:25 p.m. March 24.

Town of Pictou Fire Department Chief Paul Janes was among the first on the scene after receiving the 911 call. Four other departments were soon dispatched and an aerial ladder was requested to help fight the blaze.

“We pretty quickly were able to control it. The fire is out and we’re just clearing the building from residual smoke,” said Janes.

Sections of the building were closed off and firefighters brought fans inside to blow smoke left over from the fire outside through open windows.

The Pictou County RCMP had set up barriers to prevent entry into the facility. RCMP were also busy discouraging motorists from pulling over to the side of the busy 106 highway.

"It's very dangerous for onlookers and traffic coming though," Janes told The News.

Only one employee was on the site at the time of the fire. They are unharmed. The fire was contained to the warehouse and no other injuries are reported.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Advocate operation prints many products from flyers to weekly newspapers, including the Pictou Advocate.
