Lobster fishermen set sail in SW Nova, 3 incidents of men overboard

Weather conditions were cold but otherwise kind to lobster fishermen as they set sail at 6 a.m. Monday (Nov. 30).

Despite agreeable weather, the season that opened in southwestern Nova Scotia, and along the province's south shore, was not  without mishap.

Prior to 10 a.m. a call was placed to Coast Guard Radio Channel 16 about two fishermen who were in the water. (The exact location was unknown at the time of this posting.) A mayday relay was sent out for any nearby vessels that could provide assiatance. Two fishing vessels indicated that they were enroute.

The two men were pulled back onboard their vessel but did require medical attention. A Cormorant helicopter was tasked to drop two SAR techs onto the boat to provide further assistance.

At 10:20 the Cormorant was reportedly approaching the fishing vessel. Crew onboard the vessel were being asked by Coast Guard Radio to flag the helicopter.

The SAR techs were lowered onto the vessel to assess the two men.

There was also another fisherman in a separate incident that went overboard. That man was also pulled back onto his vessel.
