ARCADIA - Motorists are advised to use caution and expect traffic delays through Arcadia during the replacement of the sidewalk on the east side of the road.

The project was approved as part of the 2018-19 capital budget for the Municipality of Yarmouth.

Chief administrative officer Victoria Brooks provided the reasons for the project when contacted.

Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal had raised concerns with curb failures causing damage to plows and poor storm drainage.

There were several trip hazards identified on the finished surface which could have caused injury to users.

The surface was not wide enough for winter maintenance equipment and to meet accessibility considerations for those with mobility barriers.

The section being replaced is over 20 years old and beyond what is deemed “useful life” in asset management terms.

“The project is part of a larger list of projects which meet the active transportation goals of the municipality,” Brooks said.

“We expect the work to take about 10 weeks to complete, which will take us to the first or second week of December.”
