DIGBY, N.S. — Three members of the Digby Ground Search and Rescue (DGSAR) team were recognized for their years of volunteer service at the annual awards banquet in Barton on Dec. 6.
Leslie Fredericks, Sheila White and Brian Maling received certificates and service awards for 35, 25 and five years, respectively, while nine new members were recognized for joining the team.
Fredericks said there have been many changes in the over 35 years he has been involved with the DGSAR.
“When I joined up in the early 1980s, we were a small group with maps, compasses and walkie-talkies,” Fredericks said. “Our training and operations have improved over the years with advancements in technology and communications. We are always upgrading.”
DGSAR provides vital services that include searching for lost individuals, assistance during natural disasters, flood watch, mutual aid to all teams in the province and traffic control.
President Larry Brooks said 2019 has been a busy year, especially during August and September.
“The team had three search calls before, during and right after this year's Wharf Rat Rally while we were providing traffic control for the event,” Brooks said. “During hurricane Dorian we brought fuel for generators, food and water to those who could not get out, especially seniors, and we checked on the mink ranches to make sure the animals had food and water.”
Brooks said anyone 18 and up can join, as long as they pass a criminal records check, and DGSAR provides the training.
“Volunteers learn how to read maps, use a compass and GPS, communications and how to be part of the team,” Brooks said. “Our oldest, Jim Haight, is 81 and still an active member but we need the youth involved to ensure this service continues.”
Treasurer Sheila White said DGSAR always needs new members and there is a job for everyone.
“We need searchers, volunteers to take care of the searchers, logistics people and transport drivers.” White said. “One of our members is a mechanic and is able to help maintain our vehicles.”
DGSAR incorporated in 1973, serves all communities in the Municipality of Digby with 28 active members who meet and train at the Digby Municipal Airport in Hillgrove every Thursday evening.
