YARMOUTH BAR, N.S. — A $1-million roadwork infrastructure project at Yarmouth Bar that was initially expected to be finished in early April has a new completion date of late June/early July.
Work – which is being carried out by the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal – includes replacement of the causeway bridge leading to Cape Forchu, along with maintenance of the seawall and placement of armour stone.
The work was needed as the existing bridge and seawall had degraded over the decades.
BJ Soldan, a foreman with Wilcraft Concrete Services Ltd., says existing infrastructure problems are continually being discovered.
“In a job like this, you come across stuff and you don’t know what’s underneath,” he said.
“We find more problems as we go. It’s kind of hard to estimate exactly what date we’ll be done.”
The crew was working on a concrete wall on the south side of the new bridge in early May.
A temporary stop light for one-way traffic over the bridge was installed for the duration of the project.
Work began last November and continued through the winter as weather permitted.
A tent warmed by heaters was in place over work areas to provide tolerable conditions in brutally cold weather.
Yarmouth Bar is home port to 15-20 fishing boats and the road (Hwy 304) receives a lot of traffic as it is the only route to the Cape Forchu lighthouse.
