YARMOUTH, N.S. — A full-moon walk is planned for Jan. 10 at Ellenwood Park, weather permitting. The moonlit hikes have been held in the past and draw a good-sized crowd.
Friends of Ellenwood Park (FOEP), a non-profit group, has been organizing “off-season” activities at the park for many years. Spokesperson Chris Bolger says the moonlight hike is a great opportunity for photographers or for those who just appreciate the region’s “beautiful, starry night skies.”
“We’ll meet everyone at the Mood Road parking lot at 7 p.m. and walk around the lakefront loop before warming up with a hot drink at the ski cabin and heading home by 9 p.m.,” he says.
“Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight (just in case).”
The next two full-moon hikes are planned for Sunday, Feb. 9, and Monday, March 9.
When there’s enough snow on the ground for skiing, FOEP member Stephen Sollows will be out with the groomer working on the trails.
Free loans of ski equipment are available from noon to 4 p.m. any Saturday or Sunday for use on site. FOEP representatives will be at the park on Heritage Day, Monday, Feb.17, if there's skiable snow.
Friends of Ellenwood are also open to hosting school groups for outdoor winter experiences.
“We hosted groups from Maple Grove and from Central Elementary School last year,” says Bolger.
“Our ability to do this depends on having available volunteers to host on any particular day and we are limited to a maximum of 30 students, plus their teachers and parent escorts. With or without snow, we make it fun.”
Note: All events are weather dependent and will be cancelled if it's too icy or conditions are unfavourable. Always check the FOEP website for updates before heading out. Visitors are asked to sign in at the gate when they arrive.
