CAPE FORCHU, NS - The Leif Ericson trail at the Cape Forchu lighthouse has reopened, but users are reminded to respect the remediation work.
Greg Shay, interim CAO for the Municipality of Yarmouth and director of finance, says now is the time to respect that the park has endured a fair amount of disturbance, and even with the remediation efforts, it will take a little while for nature to fully reclaim the site.
“We are asking park users to consider this while they are out there enjoying it,” he said.
The ground in some areas of the trail was disturbed by machinery required to construct temporary buildings and a period lighthouse for the movie The Lighthouse. Reseeding, re-sodding and resurfacing the walkways was completed around mid-May. Shay says it will likely take a while for natural vegetation to move back in and take over the site as it was before.
The trail had been closed since March 1 when the film crew started building the set at the end of the Leif Ericson park.
Initially people could still access the parking lot at the property but then a barricade was erected on April 4 near John’s Cove beach, permitting only those involved with the film and the handful of local residents to pass.
Another set for interior shots was located at the Yarmouth airport in a hangar.
The film will be released next spring and stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
Shay says the municipality was excited and fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with LH Productions on their project.
“They were great to work with and we hope the exposure will provide dividends in the future for our area.”
