BARRINGTON, N.S. — The lightning of the Lobster Pot Christmas Tree followed by a fireworks display over Barrington Bay on Nov. 21 will spark the start of the three-week Christmas at the Causeway celebrations in the Municipality of Barrington.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Lobster Pot Christmas Tree, which – along with the many buoys that decorate it – pays tribute to those who make their living at sea and serves as remembrance of those who have been lost. The tree lighting begins at 7 p.m. on the North East Point waterfront, followed by fireworks, weather permitting. Hot apple cider and hot chocolate will be provided.

Santa will be visiting the Island and Barrington Passage Fire Hall on Nov. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. Children’s crafts and snacks will be provided. It’s also paint night at the Barrington Recreation Centre starting at 7 p.m. This is a fundraiser for the Barrington Leisure Park Association.  For more information or to register phone Krista at 902-635-0409.

The annual Barrington and Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade of Lights is set to go on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. The parade route is through the Barrington Passage Business District. Contact the Chamber to register an entry.

The Barrington Municipal Library will be hosting two children’s events during the celebration. On Nov. 28 a free Christmas Craft Program for children ages five to 12 will be held starting at 6 p.m. On Dec. 7, there is gingerbread house decorating starting at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $10 per child, Participants must pre-register for both events at the Library or by phoning 902-637-3348. Spaces are limited. 

The Wesley Heritage Community Centre in Barrington will host several musical events including the Sound of Men Christmas Cantata on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. and a family Christmas concert with Lynne Crowell on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. 

Two Christmas craft markets are being held – one on Nov. 30 at the Island and Barrington Passage Fire Hall in Centreville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Dec. 7 at the Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School (ERMES) in Shag Harbour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The ever popular Barrington and Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas House Tour is scheduled for Dec. 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. This year’s tour is in the Villagedale Road, Clyde River area.

Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased the day of the tour at the Clyde River United Church. 

'Tales our Tree Tells' is a new event added this year that tells the story of someone remembered on the Lobster Pot Christmas Tree. Being held on Dec. 2 at the Barrington Municipal Administrative Centre in Barrington starting at 7 p.m., the tale being told this year is of Captain Horatio H. Brannen, who lost his life in the Halifax explosion, while making the heroic effort as commander of the S.S. Stella Maris to reach the burning Mont Blanc and tow her to a place of greater safety before the catastrophe came. The presentation is being made through the Barrington Museum Complex/Cape Sable Historical Society. 

On Dec. 7, the 2K and 5K Reindeer Dash fun run will be held at the Barrington Recreation Centre on Sherose Island. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the run at 9 a.m.

Also on Dec. 7 is Christmas in the Park at the Barrington Exhibition Grounds from 1 to 4 p.m.

A free skate with Santa will be held on Dec. 8 at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Wrapping up the community Christmas celebration will be the annual Lighting of the Seal Island Light Museum and Old Meeting House Christmas concert on Dec. 14 at the Barrington Museum Complex at 7 p.m. Hosted by the Cape Sable Historical Society, refreshments will follow at the multi-purpose room at the Barrington Municipal Administrative Centre featuring warm gingerbread, tea and coffee. 

The Barrington Museum Complex gift shop will be open for tax free shopping during the season. In November the gift shop, located in the Old Court House in Barrington, will be open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.  In December the gift shop will be open 12 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, until Dec. 21 and by appointment. A special Christmas Shopping Party is also planned for Nov. 30 from 12 to 7 p.m.
