YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Yarmouth Rural RCMP has seized 100 firearms from a home in Chebogue, Yarmouth County, claiming the firearms were not properly secured or stored.

On Monday, Aug. 5, members of the detachment responded to what the RCMP are calling a mis-dialled 911 call. The number was dialled by mistake. The 73-year-old homeowner was cooperative when RCMP arrived, and let them into his house.

While checking the home to ensure there was no emergency, the RCMP say they made an unusual discovery.

“RCMP officers found that the homeowner had a total of 100 firearms in the home, including 94 long guns and six handguns, none of which were properly secured,” reads an RCMP media release.

The homeowner was arrested without incident for Unsafe Storage of a Firearm and the police seized all 100 guns.

Asked about how the guns were being stored inside the home, RCMP Corporal Jennifer Clarke says, “As an example, none of the long guns had trigger locks or were in a locked cabinet.”

The homeowner was later released and is scheduled to appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on Oct. 5.

The investigation is ongoing. The RCMP say there is a possibility that other charges may be laid depending on how the investigation progresses.
