YARMOUTH, N.S. —
Students from schools in Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne counties were recognized at a ceremony in Halifax on May 1, where they were awarded Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medals.
The following is a list of students from Tri-County Centre Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) schools that were honoured at the ceremony.
This list and bios were supplied to this newspaper by the regional Education Office serving the tri-counties, based on the submissions prepared by the schools.
Brooke Katlyn Cotter: Lockeport Regional High
Brooke has spent many years volunteering. She has been part of the Students Parliament, taking on many different roles and responsibilities. Brooke can be found in our school canteen and on our yearbook committee, all while playing sports and maintaining a high average in school. School is not the only place she can be found, Brooke spends countless hours volunteering for many youth sporting events, community clean ups and children's activities.
Bryer Cunningham: YCMHS
A committed student who excels in the demanding International Baccalaureate diploma program. He is bright, capable and committed to this academic challenge. Bryer has been involved with sport since a young age. He is a well-rounded athlete who excels at a multitude of sports including both Varsity and Club soccer and basketball and competitive bowling. Bryer regularly referees soccer, manages the clock at basketball games and also coaches younger players. His good nature, humor and leadership skills make him a positive role model for team mates and younger athletes. Bryer is also involved in the Rotary Interact Club at Yarmouth High and currently holds Treasurer position. Enjoys tutoring Math and Science and is also a peer tutor. Despite being very busy with all of his interests and commitments, Bryer regularly and willingly volunteers at many events. Bryer is an outstanding young man genuinely committed to making a difference in his school and community.
Esther Victoria Garren: Lockeport Regional High
Esther is a keen volunteer in not only our school but in our town. She has earned her place on our honour roll every year, while being active in the school's breakfast programs, yearbook, canteen and as a student athelet. She has raised funds for the Canadian Cancer Society and helped organize countless activities throughout the school.Esther's heart gravitates with young children it seems, she has volunteered at our after school program, her church's nursery program and even the town Easter egg hunt. She carols at the local nursing home and spends time helping others at our food bank. It is an honour to recommend Esther for this prestigious award she definitely deserves it.
Josie Hatfield: Barrington Municipal High
Josie Hatfield is an extremely committed and motivated youth. She is a dancer and instructor for KidzAct, which she has been a part of since she was only 5 years old. This takes a great deal of her time as she strives for perfection in her dance performances, and volunteers to instruct younger dancers who look up to her as a coach and mentor. Along with her commitments to dance, Josie is dedicated to maintaining a high academic average in the French Immersion program. Josie is excited to be embarking upon two new adventures in the near future, as she has been accepted to partake in the SHAD Valley Summer Enrichment Program for 2019, and she is a member of the BMHS Me to We group that will be travelling to Tanzania next March.
Elsi Himmelman: Shelbure Regional High
SRHS is pleased to announce Elsi Himmelman as one of two recipients of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award. Elsi is an excellent student and an active participant in both her school and community. Elsi has been part of the SRHS Lego robotics team since grade seven and is currently a mentor for our junior team and a member of our senior robotics team. In addition to this she is involved with Techsploration, the yearbook committee, the Duke of Edinburgh Programme, and serves as an NSISP Ambassador. In the community Elsi has volunteered with Teens Lending Care, the Shelburne Municipal Recreation Department, and the Jordan Falls Baptist Church. This year Elsi attended the Campeche Leadership Camp in Mexico and had the opportunity to live with a Mexican family, volunteer in the community and raise money to support local organizations in Mexico. Elsi enjoys helping others and recognizes the need for volunteers in a variety of groups. She is a dedicated young woman who strives to do her best in all areas of her life.
Molly Willa MacNaughton: Digby Regional High
Molly is a very well-rounded student at Digby Regional High School. She has demonstrated her leadership skills in numerous school and community activities by fundraising for events such as school sports, school band, Me to We, Christmas Daddies, the local food bank and the various programs at 4-H. Molly’s musical skills include the DRHS band, performing at numerous events and playing for the residents at Tideview Terrace every year since she was 5 years old. Molly’s leadership skills shine in her work with 4-H and the Christian Youth Fellowship. She has organized and developed art classes for youth at her church by collaborating with a local artist and is currently organizing watercolour classes in order to make cards for future fundraising. She has organized and facilitated various recreational activities and summer camps for local youth. Molly’s passion for sustainability and the environment is apparent in her 4-H work, filming a video to promote the Digby Farmer’s Market and raising chickens on her own to sell farm fresh eggs in the community. On top of all these activities, Molly manages to keep a high academic average in her courses.
Ashalen Mary Jaden McCulloch: St Mary’s Bay Academy
Ashalen McCulloch is a Grade 11 student at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy who feels that academics are just as important as inspiring others. She is part of the 02 program, regularly attending certifications and environmental clean ups. Ashalen is the founder and editor of her school’s magazine for the creative, The Unknown. She is part of the track team and an active member of the GSA. Ashalen has been doing a Co-op placement at Atlantic Treasures in Digby this school year and will is now at her next Co-op placement at the Tri-County Vanguard newspaper. Ashalen has achieved high honors three years in a row and has maintained a strong academic record throughout her schooling.
Samuel Vincent James McDormand: St Mary’s Bay Academy
Samuel McDormand is a Grade 11 student at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy. He has been involved in Student Council, Math League and school sports - such as basketball, track & field and volleyball. Samuel is actively involved with the NSISP students at his school and seeks to help in any way he can. He is one of the leading academic students in his grade and achieves Honors with Distinction each year. Samuel is a frequent volunteer supervisor for special events held at the local library and an usher for the Digby & Area Theatre Society. He has completed his Bronze Cross and National Lifesaving courses which focus on leadership and water safety, and allow him to take initiative in water related incidents. In the summer, Samuel works as a lifeguard.
Logan Nickerson: Barrington Municipal High
Logan Nickerson is an extremely well-rounded French Immersion student who is involved in numerous extra-curricular activities, and has taken on many volunteering roles. Logan has been a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets for 5 years and has earned the position of Petty Officer First Class. Logan has a passion for sailing and commits a great deal of his time towards teaching the younger students sailing skills. Logan is also an active member of two Church Youth groups and the Agape Café Youth Centre. In March 2018 he travelled to New York with this group to assist the homeless and those suffering from addiction. Most recently, Logan was selected to be part the BMHS Me To We Group and will be traveling to Tanzania in March 2020 to help build a school for students living in impoverished conditions.
Kennedy Alexis Patterson: Digby Regional High
Kennedy demonstrates her leadership skills in a variety of school and community activities. She has taken on an active leadership role when the local dance studio closed and is now teaching recreational and competitive dance classes and the new Digby Dance Studio. She plans and teaches one-hour dance lessons, 4 days a week for multiple styles of dance and various age groups. In addition to teaching lessons, she is also involved in fundraising for the studio and acts as the liaison for the school and the community. Kennedy has also demonstrated her leadership skills with the Nova Scotia Christian Youth Fellowship by holding Vice President and Public Relations positions. She also plans activities for youth at the Johnston Christian Park and has taken a 10 day youth counsellor training program. Kennedy is also involved in volunteering for Tideview Terrace, the Digby Area Theatre Society, school sporting events, peer mentoring, Schools Plus Advisory Committee, Me to We, Yearbook, Hungry for Education and has participated in the Horizons Leadership Conference. DRHS is very proud of your dedication to the local community and school.
Savannah Taylor: Shelburne Regional High School
SRHS is pleased to announce Savannah Taylor as one of two recipients of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award. Savannah is an active participant in both school and community. She excels academically and her competitive nature shines through in both her school and community involvement. She is an all-around athlete; participating on a variety of school sports teams, with her favourite being track. Savannah encourages and supports her teammates and does not shy away from taking on leadership roles in coaching younger participants. This past year Savannah was recognized as the Female Sailor of the Year from Sail Nova Scotia. Her dedication to sailing has led to countless hours volunteering at the Sailing School and the Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club. Savannah has also been invited to represent Canada at the 2019 Youth World Championship. She is a determined young woman who pushes herself to achieve both scholastically and personally; while encouraging others to do the same.
Noah Wilcox: YCMHS
A top ranked student who has been recognized for academic excellence throughout high school while playing sports, volunteering and working part-time. He competes in baseball and Track and Field but his real passion is basketball. Noah is a leader and key player on the Varsity Basketball team. He also plays Rep U18 and is a valuable leader on that squad. Noah was selected and represented Nova Scotia on the U14 and U15 Provincial Teams. He also attended the Adidas Top 41 Camp where he was named an All Star. Noah is also very involved with his church, attends Youth Group and serves his community through road side clean ups, shoveling snow for seniors and helping them move. Noah also plans and runs games on a weekly basis for younger children. Family is very important to Noah and he spends a lot of time with his grandparents. Noah is a true gentleman, always considerate and kind to others. Teachers note his genuine, innate kindness and acceptance demonstrated in the classroom, on the court and in the halls. Noah is highly respected and held in high regard at school and in the community. He remains very genuine, unassuming and modest, despite his myriad of accomplishments.
