YARMOUTH - A Yarmouth man has been charged with animal cruelty involving 10 dogs kept in unsanitary conditions.
Douglas Wilson was charged on Oct. 24 with allegedly causing animals to be in distress contrary to section 21 (1); failing to provide animals with adequate water and food, contrary to section 22 (a); failing to provide adequate medical attention when an animal was wounded or ill, contrary to section 22 (b); confining animals to an enclosure to an area with inadequate space and unsanitary conditions, contrary to section 22 (d) of the Animal Protection Act of NS; and willfully permitting unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal, contrary to Section 445.1 (1) A of the Criminal Code of Canada.
SPCA officers responded to a complaint received on Oct. 2. At that time they seized three dogs that were in immediate distress. On Oct. 6 they returned with a search warrant and seized another seven dogs from the property. Three of the 10 dogs had to be euthanized.
In a separate incident, Nicole Jacquard was charged on Oct. 24 with allegedly causing animals to be in distress, contrary to section 21 (1) of the Animal Protection Act, and willfully permitting unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal contrary to Section 445.1 (1) A of the Criminal Code of Canada
SPCA officers responded to a complaint received from the public and from RCMP in September regarding abuse to dogs. After a thorough investigation, a dog was seized from Jacquard’s residence on Main Street in Yarmouth on Oct. 2.
Wilson and Jacquard are both scheduled to appear in Yarmouth provincial court Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m.
