YARMOUTH, N.S. — Volunteers and wheelchair loans are being sought to assist those with mobility issues to see and experience the Candy Cane Lane Festival to be held in Yarmouth Nov. 23.
The festival event will feature stationary floats and other attractions along Main Street from 5 to 8 p.m.
Karen Doucette says she has organized Karen's Candy Canes in the spirit of helping out her community.
She’s looking for “candy cane helpers" to push people in wheelchairs around to visit the displays and enjoy the festival.
Doucette also hopes businesses and organizations having them will loan a wheelchair or two for use during the festival.
She’s looking, as well, for people to pick wheelchairs up and drop them off, unless donors can bring them to Alma Square between 4 and 4:30 p.m. the day of the event.
Doucette has had mobility issues herself, in the past, with MS.
“I’ve wheeled in their wheels,” she smiled. “Sometimes all we need is a helping hand. I'd love to be able to offer this for those in need.”
Volunteers are requested to meet in Alma Square by 4:15 p.m. They are asked to wear red and white to be more noticeable.
Doucette is contacting seniors’ homes and other facilities to see how many will require Karen's Candy Canes service.
