YARMOUTH, N.S. — The owners of a local event-planning business will be exploring the possibility of holding a cultural festival in Yarmouth next fall.
“It’s on our list to continue to explore and we’d really like to bring it to fruition,” says Candice Phibbs, who owns Mile East Productions with her husband, Rick Allwright.
The last multicultural festival in Yarmouth was held several years ago by a volunteer committee that has since dissolved.
In January, Phibbs and Allwright began planning for a cultural festival at the Mariners Centre for last summer. However, as the date grew closer, there were many challenges, including getting community members from local diverse cultural groups involved. They decided to try and reschedule the festival in 2020.
In November, the couple attended a newcomers’ reception to touch base with several cultural groups to see if there is interest for 2020. They plan to follow up with groups in the new year.
“If we have enough expressed interest we are looking at fall 2020,” says Phibbs.
Mile East Productions is the organizing company behind such annual events as the Yarmouth Spring Living Show, Yarmouth Craft Beer Festival, Starlight Runway Run, Yarmouth Dog Jog, Escape Games, Trivia Nights and others.
Should the 2020 event go ahead, ethnic dishes will be an important part of the festival.
“We’re quite big foodies and we want it to be done right. Right from the get-go that was one of our priorities,” Phibbs said earlier this year.
The organizers are aiming for a “multicultural block party” with tables pushed together and a family-style neighbourhood atmosphere.
Entertainment would be provided by local performers, as well as dancers from other areas.
