YARMOUTH, N.S. – The Yarmouth RCMP are still investigating a July 24 fire that took place at 3 East St. to try and determine its cause.
“It’s certainly suspicious. We haven’t determined whether it was arson though,” said RCMP Cpl. John Stoddart. “It's been so hot lately, dry, it’s possible it could have started by some other means.”
There was no one inside the property at the time of the fire, which happened around 7 a.m. The property has been undergoing some renovations.
Cpl. Stoddart said it’s suspected the fire started under the front wooden steps of the building. From there, he said, it slowly spread up the steps and melted siding on the front of the house.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which fortunately was contained to the porch area and had not spread into the interior of the property.
“We’re reviewing video footage in the area to see what happened, and we’ve talked to witnesses who were in the area. We’re still investigating,” Cpl. Stoddart said on July 26.
