At the Breakwater Wharf in Wedgeport, boats waited just outside the mouth of the harbour – some by 5 a.m. – while the port emptied little by little as the 6 a.m. start time to the season drew near and boats were permitted to head to sea to dump their lobster traps.
At times the only thing drowning out of the sound of the vessel engines was the sound of a military aircraft flying overhead. With boats weighed down with traps and gear, dumping day is considered the most risky of the season.
Fishermen will be permitted to start hauling catches one minute after midnight.
