A Mountie in Pictou County has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman.

The male Mountie and the alleged victim know each other, said a news release from the province's Serious Incident Response Team, which has taken over the investigation from the RCMP.

The Pictou District RCMP received a report of the alleged assault from a third party on Wednesday.

SIRT can begin an investigation after a referral from a police chief, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the provincial justice minister. It can also act on a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the findings of the investigation within three months of its completion.
