New rules go into effect across Canada today that increase drunk-driving penalties and give police more power to demand breath samples drivers they legally stop.

Now, police officers will be able to ask for a breath sample from any driver they pull over. Previously, an officer needed to have a reasonable suspicion that someone was impaired.

Also, penalties will be getting steeper, with the maximum for some drunk-driving crimes increasing from five to 10 years.
