WOLFVILLE, N.S. — He hopes to rally financial support for a Wolfville family in a time of need and help demonstrate the community’s love, compassion and support.
Andrew Conrad has launched a GoFundMe campaign to benefit the family of 51-year-old Premkumar Ramanujam of Wolfville. Ramanujam died in a motor vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Kentville, between exits 13 and 14, on Dec. 3.
Conrad said he is close friends with Ajay Ramanujam, Premkumar’s son. They study together at Acadia Divinity College, where Ajay is pursuing a master of divinity degree.
Conrad said he was in a state of disbelief after hearing the tragic news.
“It was just a surreal moment,” Conrad said. “In many ways, it continues to be.”
Premkumar was the main financial provider for the family. He is survived by his wife, Anita, and sons, Ajay and Andrew. Anita is finishing her master of education degree at Acadia and Andrew is in his last year at Horton High School. The family moved to the Annapolis Valley from India in 2017.
Conrad said he launched the online fundraiser because he immediately recognized how many people wanted to reach out and do whatever they could to help the family.
Conrad saw it as an opportunity to gather and funnel those resources and to give people a tangible way to help. He hopes it will alleviate some of the immediate and pending financial pressures facing the Ramanujams.
Conrad said the love, compassion and support being demonstrated by those donating to the campaign is equally as important to the family.
“Just knowing that the community is praying for them, thinking of them, hurting with them…even just that alone, they’re just so grateful for and comforted by,” Conrad said.
Funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will go directly to the Ramanujam family to help cover any costs associated with this difficult time and ongoing expenses. The initial goal is $25,000. In the first four days of the campaign, $14,710 was raised with donations continuing to come in.
