More than a half-dozen tenants have been displaced after a fire occurred at a six-unit apartment building on Mill Street in Waterville.
The fire was called in shortly after 8 p.m. Dec. 6. Upon arrival, firefighters noticed heavy fire was showing in a lower apartment unit but it was quickly knocked down.
Kevin Ernest, a spokesperson with the Waterville and District Fire Department, said there was extensive fire damage to at least a couple of rental units, with smoke throughout the rest of building.
Mutual aid came from Kingston to Kentville, with New Minas and Middleton fire departments providing stand in coverage.
Canadian Red Cross volunteers arranged emergency lodging, food, clothing purchases and other basics for four adults from two of the apartments. Tenants of the other four units were either away at the time or left the scene before Red Cross volunteers arrived, but a Red Cross press release indicates they will be offered similar help if needed.
There were no reports of injuries from the fire, however, Ernest said firefighters attempted to resuscitate a cat and a small dog but were unsuccessful.
