Quick-thinking neighbours helped an elderly woman escape a house fire in Maddox Cove early Monday morning just seconds after her husband got out of the smoke-filled home.

The neighbours then sheltered the elderly couple in their home next door as both had suffered smoke inhalation.

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived on scene on Motion Bay Road just after 1 a.m. to find smoke coming from the home and they quickly laid an attack line into the structure. It appears the fire originated in a chair and quickly filled the house with thick smoke.

The couple were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, which were credited with possibly saving their lives, but unfortunately a family dog perished in the fire.

The two were taken to hospital by Eastern Health ambulance to be treated for the smoke inhalation.

There was no major fire damage but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home.
