SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton Eagles received some unexpected news late Thursday afternoon.
Russian forward Egor Sokolov was reassigned to Cape Breton after being released from the Columbus Blue Jackets main camp.
On Wednesday, Eagles head coach Jake Grimes told the Cape Breton Post that the Blue Jackets had ruled out a possible return of Sokolov to Cape Breton for the team's opening weekend in Bathurst, N.B.
Cape Breton found out Sokolov would be returning to the club while traveling to Bathurst Thursday afternoon.
The team was able to arrange travel for Sokolov to join the club in New Brunswick Friday afternoon. Pending no flight issues, Sokolov was expected to be in the Eagles lineup Friday night.
