A woman was taken to hospital by LifeFlight after the vehicle she was driving was struck by a train in Oakfield.
Around 11:45 a.m. Monday, a woman was driving with a girl when her vehicle was hit by a train at a railway crossing with no flashing lights on North Fork Road. The crossing is just northeast of the Oakfield Golf and Country Club.
“The lady was coming out of the road and she didn’t know the train was coming and the train must have clipped her and took her down into the ditch,” said Mick Greener, who lives nearby on Christopher King Lane.
Greener said he was sleeping at the time of the collision, but was awakened by the girl knocking on his door.
“She ran down the road and knocked on my door. She was in a panic and just pounding on the door,” he said.
“The little girl’s OK, but the lady, I don’t know.”
Greener said the woman was breathing when he got to the car.
Corey Beals, assistant chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, said firefighters removed the woman from the vehicle through a door.
“The vehicle was on its side and we gained access through one of the doors on the vehicle, but we didn’t require extrication gear,” Beals said.
Beals said the girl sustained minor injuries, while the woman’s injuries are serious. The woman has been taken to hospital in Halifax.
RCMP investigators and CN crew members remained on scene for a few hours after the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
