One woman is dead after being struck by a pickup truck on Belcher Street in Kentville on Tuesday morning.
The collision happened at the intersection of Belcher Street and Oakdene Avenue just before 7:45 a.m.
Kentville police said the woman was walking her dog at the time, and the initial investigation indicates that they were in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the eastbound truck.
Someone who knows the woman said she took daily walks with the dog at Miners Marsh trail in the town.
The dog ran off, but was later found, scared but safe, behind the victim’s nearby home.
Kentville firefighters and paramedics also responded, but the woman died at the scene.
Traffic on the busy roadway was shut down between Campbell Road and Cornwallis Street while an RCMP collision reconstruction team worked at the scene. The road was reopened at 3 p.m.
Police said they aren’t releasing the identity of the woman right now, but that she was a resident of the town.
The truck was driven by a 41-year-old male. Deputy police chief Darryl Brown said there has been no decision on charges or tickets.
“We have to allow time for the reconstruction team to submit their file to us,” he said.
This was the second serious collision involving a pedestrian in the town this year.
On April 10, a 59-year-old man was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Aberdeen Street at Main Street in a crosswalk.
He was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, which included broken bones and a concussion.
The 66-year-old driver of the truck was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian.
