YARMOUTH, N.S. – Town crews have been working to repair a major water leak in the Town of Yarmouth, with the town issuing an update shortly after 9 a.m. saying that “if all goes according to plan” water service should be restored in affected areas by 3 p.m. Thursday.
However, a 3:40 p.m. the town said the problem had not yet been repaired.
"This is to advise that crews are still working diligently to repair the leak on Main Street. Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to provide an updated restoration time. The crews have encountered some difficulties that are delaying the repairs," said the town.
A water service interruption had continued throughout Wednesday night for customers on Main Street between Chestnut and Elm Street, the town said on its Facebook page, where it has been issuing updates on the situation.
While the water was discoloured, the town was telling affected residents that the water was safe to use and drink.
On Wednesday the town was advising of a substantial water leak on Main and Chestnut streets that was resulting in discoloured water and low water pressure in some areas served by the town’s water supply.
“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the town had said.
The town was saying there was more than one leak and on Wednesday town crews were working as quickly as possible to isolate and repair the leaks. A Department of Public Works supervisor was reportedly going door-to-door, notifying customers in the area.
The town said water pressure was also impacted.
“We are pumping up the water to build pressure in the tanks,” the town had stated on its Facebook page Wednesday. “Crews going as fast as they can but you can help by conserving water this morning, allowing pressure to build up.”
While water pressure did later return to normal, on Main Street between Vancouver Street and Starrs Road water service had been interrupted on Wednesday.
Crews did work into the night, but due to weather conditions and safety concerns work was halted at the site of the leak in north end Wednesday evening as freezing rain, snow and heavy rain was in the forecast.
On Thursday morning the foot of Chestnut Street, abutting Main Street, was closed to traffic, and traffic was being controlled on Main Street stop and slow signs.
