Frances Hodgson — Yarmouth

HODGSON, Frances Enid (nee Thomas) of Port Maitland, passed away peacefully in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in her 95th year on Wednesday April 11, 2018 after a short illness. Frances was born on the 21 October 1923 in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia and was the first child of Olive and Ashton Thomas (both deceased). Frances is survived by her children, Geoffrey (Linda) Hodgson, Eric (Linda) Hodgson, Mark (Lorraine) Hodgson and Jennifer (Ian) White; her grandchildren Sharon, Shannon, Sean, William, Michael, Mathew, Emily, David, Caleigh and Liam; her great grandchildren Lexi, William, Layla and Lakelyn. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Wallace Hodgson, her brother Shirley (Lew) Thomas and her sister Blanche Meisner. Fran had an exciting life. As a child she survived a gunshot wound, an attack by a vicious dog and the great depression. As a young lady she was a clerk at the shore General Store and a volunteer in the Saint John Ambulance Brigade. Nurses were in short supply during the war and Frances volunteered for duty once a week at the Yarmouth Hospital as a Nurses Aide. While so employed, she met her future husband Wallace who was in Yarmouth training under the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. During their marriage they lived in England, Weymouth, Port Maitland, Digby and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Newfoundland. She loved to travel and visited her children in Saskatoon, Colorado Springs, Europe and India. Frances was a member of the Bayview Baptist Church. She loved gardening and maintained beautiful flower gardens at her home all her life. She loved animals and always had at least one dog of her own and several grand dogs from her various descendants. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A funeral service took place at Sweeny's Funeral Home on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM, the Rev. Joyce Trask officiated. A private interment took place following the funeral at the Port Maitland and Beaver River Cemetery. A reception was held following the service at the Bayview Baptist Church in Port Maitland.
