William Cottreau — Yarmouth

William Cottreau
COTTREAU, William Henry – age 85, Upper Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Sunday, October 14, 2018 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born May 7, 1933 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Frank and Hilda (Boudreau) Cottreau. William was a retired lobster and scallop fisherman who was well-respected by his fellow shipmates and served as a mentor to many of them. William loved the outdoors, especially gardening, working in the woods and cutting wood. But his true passion was spending time at his log cabin at Goose Lake in Wedgeport, a cabin he singlehandedly built by himself, having done everything from preparing the land, to cutting and hewing the logs to doing the actual construction work. He was also very mechanically inclined, having been the engineer aboard the Lady Yvette, enjoyed working with small engines and he literally built his very first tractor. William was a humble, faithful man and the simple things in life brought him much happiness. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Blanche (Pothier) Cottreau, along with their children, Kenny (Colette) Cottreau, Summerville; Patsy (Guy) Surette, Surette’s Island; Corinne (Bernie) Nickerson, Overton; Gérard (Cindy) Cottreau, Wedgeport. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jacqueline, Ryan, Joline, Giles, Kirk, Stacey, Colton, Adam and Nicholas; great grandchildren, Alex, Hunter, Denver, Lily, Jude, Minya, Gentry, Jax and Gage; brothers, Raymond Cottreau, Wedgeport and Michael (Janet) Cottreau, Sackville, NS. Aside from his parents, Frank and Hilda, he was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Jefferson as well as by brothers, Ernest and Pius Cottreau and a grandson, Evan. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday with prayers at 8:00 at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. Mass of Christian Burial took place at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 18 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Henry Smolenaars officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. In William’s memory, donations to Saint Michael’s Church would be appreciated.
