The provincial government has decided it hasn’t milked the Cobequid Pass cow dry yet; they will leave that for the next election. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why they haven't reinstated the toll on the Canso Causeway.
In the meantime, the salt trucks going to and from the salt mine at Pugwash are travelling on Route 6 through Wallace,Tatamagouche and River John on their way to all points east of the Pictou rotary. I was under the impression they were to travel on Hwy. 104 or the Cobequid Pass. They lowered the speed limit on the 104 to 80 km/h to encourage them to use the pass.
There are no compliance officers on Route 6 to force the trucks off this route. It is just a matter of time before someone else is killed on this road.
I travel from Malagash to Tatamagouche daily (about 10 kilometres) and I meet about 12 semi trucks, all travelling about one foot over the yellow line, forcing traffic onto the shoulder. With snow on the shoulder, it is very easy to lose control and go into the path of one of these very heavy trucks.
I think the least the Department of Transportation could do is issue these trucks a free pass on the pass, in order to save lives.
