THE VANGUARD
The Yarmouth Pizza Delight AA Gateways, already league and Nova Scotia provincial champions, have now added an Atlantic championship to their 2014 season résumé.
The Gateways, representing Nova Scotia, won the peewee AA baseball Atlantics championship with a 5-4 win over New Brunswick (Sackville) on Sunday morning, Sept. 14, in Woodstock, N.B.
The Atlantics win caps off an impressive and successful season for the Gateways, who went undefeated in their regular season and also at provincials. They lost just one game during Atlantics, which would have been their second to last game of the season.
The Gateways finished with a season record of 27 wins and one loss. The team went 18-0 in the Bluenose League to win the league title. The Gateways went 5-0 at provincials to win the Nova Scotia title and went 4-1 in Atlantics to win the Atlantic title.
Looking at the team’s success, head coach Paul MacDonald credits his players with believing in themselves and all the hard work they put into the season for their successful.
“Even when the team faced adversity they perservered no matter the situation,” he says, also crediting his coaching staff of Mark Nickerson and Fred Charles for the team’s success. “We seem to balance each other out. I would say that this group of kids is one of the most balanced teams that I have ever been around, with solid pitching and defense, as well as solid but timely hitting. Every game someone would pick someone up, whether it be at the plate or on the field.”
