Bantam AA provincial champion to be declared in Yarmouth Sunday

YARMOUTH – Four days of hockey action have come down to the last of the games to determine a Bantam AA Hockey Nova Scotia provincial champion. And it will come down to Bedford and Cape Breton.UPDATE: Bedford won the championship game 3-1. (Story to be posted later.)

On the final day of round robin play at Hockey Nova Scotia Bantam AA Provincials on Saturday, teams were looking to position themselves to advance to provincials. The top four teams would advance to play on Sunday.

As of the end of the day Friday, the standings were as follows heading into the final round robin games:

• Cape Breton had 6 points

• Bedford and Sackville each had 4 points

• Yarmouth and South Shore had 3 points

• Western Valley had 2 points

• Glace Bay had 0 points

The host Yarmouth Mariners played South Shore at noon, with the winner advancing to semi-finals. South Shore edged out the host team 3-1, scoring their final goal on Yarmouth's empty net. There had been no scoring in the first period and Yarmouth had scored with 14.6 seconds remaining in the second.

By the end of the day the teams that had quailifed for the Sunday semis were:

• Bedford (4th) versus Sackville (1st). UPDATE: That game saw a 3-1 Bedford victory.

• South Shore (3rd) vs Cape Breton (2nd). Cape Breton won the game 3-0.

Sunday's championship is at 2 p.m.

OTHER TOURNAMENT NOTES:

Friday evening in front of a huge crowd at the Mariners Centre Yarmouth had a 5-4 win over Sackville. The Mariners scored in first minute. Sackville tied it in the period. Yarmouth eventually went up 3-1, with Sackville closes the gap to 3-2 by the end of the second period. In the third, Yarmouth went up 4-2, but again Sackville came within one for 4-3 score, that goal coming with 4:53 left in third. Yarmouth then went up 5-3 with 4:22 left. In the final minute Yarmouth went on the powerplay. Sackville pulled it's goalie for the extra attacker rather than being shorthanded. Yarmouth hung onto the win.
