Yarmouth Mariners weekend wins improve early season record to 4-0

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Mariners’ 3-2 road win over the Valley Wildcats Saturday night improved the team’s early season record to 4-0.

The Yarmouth Mariners defeated the Valley Wildcats 5-2 at home on Friday and 3-2 on the road on Saturday.

But it was the Mariners’ 5-2 win over Valley at home on Friday that really had fans cheering.

Trailing the Wildcats 2-0, the Mariners scored five goals in the third period to take the 5-2 victory.

Despite outshooting the Wildcats 14-9 in the first period of the Sept. 16 game, the Wildcats took the early game lead on goals by Grant Janes and Nicholas Gibson.

There was no scoring in the second period.

The Mariners put up their first marker at 6:26 in the third on a goal by Chris Goreham (Matthew Barron, Andrew Martell). Their next goal came at 8:21 from Brodie Butt (Noah McMullin).

At 16:02 Barron (Aaron Maillet) scored the tie-breaking goal to put the Mariners up 3-2. Thirty-three seconds later at 16:35 Maillet (Barron, Martell) doubled the Mariners lead to 4-2. Valley pulled its goalie for the extra attacked at the end of the game but Martell (Barron, Maillet) scored on the empty net.

Barron’s four points earned him first star of the game. Maillet was named second star. The Valley’s Riley Cunningham was third star.

In net the Mariners’ Leif Hertz turned away 23 of 25 shots. In net for Valley Alec Lindberg stopped 31 of 35 shots.

In Berwick on Sept. 17 neither team scored in the first period in the second game of their home and home.

The Mariners scored all of their goals in the second period, coming from Connor Peveril (Matthew Smith), Mateo Short (Jonathan Mason), and Aaron Maillet (Andrew Martell).

Valley scored its two goals in the third period off the sticks of Adam Nolan and Grant Janes.

In net for the Mariners Brendan Cregan, named first star of the game, stopped 31 of 33 shots. Aaron Maillet was named second star.

The Mariners had 22 shots on the Valley net.

The Mariners are at home this weekend.
