YCMHS Vikings get past Digby Mariners with 8-7 win in high school hockey

DIGBY – In a game that ended in the identical score the first time these two teams met, the Yarmouth Vikings edged the Digby Mariners 8-7 in Valley High School Hockey League action in Digby on Oct. 30.

In their previous meeting in Yarmouth, it was Digby that had won with the 8-7 score.

For Digby the Oct. 30 game was their season home opener. For Yarmouth it was their first win of the season following four losses.

Yarmouth was first to find the back of the net in Sunday's game with Drake Johnson scoring 56 seconds in. Later in the period Brad Jones bumped the score to 2-0. Digby responded in the first period with Dawson Acker scoring his first of the game. Before the ink was even dry on the game sheet Acker delivered another goal 11 seconds later to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. Brad Jones of Yarmouth tucked away a power play goal followed by Yarmouth's Zach LeBlanc scoring on the PP with his first high school hockey goal to end the first period with a 4-2 lead for the Vikings.

Digby came back strong during the 2nd period scoring four goals. Acker opened the second period scoring with his third goal of the game for Digby. Noah Titus scored his first of the game during a Digby power play and tied the game 4-4. Acker, with his fourth goal, buried the puck again to take the lead for the Mariners but Shay MacPhee of Yarmouth responds with a goal less than a minute later, his first high school hockey goal to tie the game 5-5. Digby again took the lead before the period ended with a goal by defenseman Graham Cromwell.  Brad Jones of Yarmouth added another goal in the game in the second period, knotting the game at 6-6.

 

Yarmouth opened the third period with Spencer Surette scoring a power play goal. Braden Trimper of Digby responded shortly after tying the game again 7-7.

Both teams battled hard to secure the win. It was the Vikings' Christopher Lerche who scored what would turn out to be the winning goal. The Vikings, playing with a short bench of just 12 skaters, were able to keep the Mariners from tying the game again.

Cody Rennehan had the win in net for the Vikings.

The Vikings are back in action Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Barrington Barons at the Mariners Centre. Digby travels to Barrington on Sunday, Nov. 6 to play the Barons at 1 p.m.

In other local high school hockey action the Par-en-Bas Sharks host the West Kings Wolverines at the Mariners Centre on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m.
