SHELBURNE, N.S. — The Albacore Internationals hosted by Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club this past summer has been named Regatta of the Year by Sail Nova Scotia.
The 2019 Sail Nova Scotia awards were handed out on Nov. 16 at the Saraguay House of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
Calling it the ‘one of the best’ regattas ever hosted in Nova Scotia, the Albacore Internationals were held in late August and featured close to 50 boats from four countries, a week of great racing, with social events each night culminating in a lobster dinner awards banquet.
“I have been to four Albacore International events, but there was something really special about the event this year in Shelburne,” wrote Paul Clifford, commodore of the Canadian Albacore Association in the awards biography.
Clifford was a competitor at the regatta. “The sailing was excellent. Competition could not have been tighter at all levels of the fleet. We had all variety of wind conditions and directions, confounding many of the best of us at times,” he said.
“The spirit of Shelburne hospitality pervaded the whole experience. It was the spirit of genuine volunteerism and down east hospitality that made the 2019 Shelburne International Albacore Championship outstandingly memorable.”
