Not much is breaking the Halifax Mooseheads' way at the moment.
They were hoping a meeting with the young Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday would be the right opportunity to help them break out of their slump but they couldn't hit the right notes. The Sea Dogs won 4-1 at Harbour Station in Saint John to hand the Mooseheads their second defeat of the weekend and extend their losing streak to four games.
The winless weekend evens the Mooseheads' record at 7-7-1-0 and leaves them in the bottom part of the middle of the pack in the QMJHL overall standings. The Sea Dogs improve to 5-9-1-0.
Nova Scotian Brady Burns scored the game's first two goals, both in a way that took the wind out of the Mooseheads' sails. His first goal came with 18 seconds left in the first period and his next one literally went in as the clock expired at the end of the second period. The officials had to review it just to make sure there was still a split second left when the puck crossed the goal line.
Halifax rookie Sonny Kabatay's first career QMJHL goal made it 2-1 early in the third period but Matt Gould and Dawson Stairs added some late insurance for the Sea Dogs.
Zachary Bouthillier stopped 25 shots for Saint John and Cole McLaren finished with 32 saves for Halifax. Raphael Lavoie's 11-game points streak came to an end, as did Bo Groulx's 10-game run.
The Mooseheads' play their next game on Tuesday at home against the Cape Breton Eagles.
Jared McIsaac (shoulder), Cole Foston (knee), Said Abi-Faycal (healthy sratch) and Brendan Tomilson (healthy scratch) did not play for Halifax.
Phoenix 3, Eagles 2: In Sydney, Taro Jentzsch snapped a 2-2 tie with 70 seconds left in the third period.
Felix Robert and Bailey Peach also scored for Sherbrooke and Derek Gentile and Ryan Francis had the Cape Breton goals.
Samuel Hlavaj made 24 saves for the Phoenix and Kevin Mandolese turned aside 28 shots for the Eagles.
