Ken Reid's latest book tells the story of one of hockey's most colourful characters.
The Sportsnet Central anchor from Pictou chronicles the life of retired Toronto Maple Leafs winger Eddie Shack and his antics going as far back as his early teens.
“Eddie talked and I listened,” Reid said in a news release. “There was nowhere that Eddie didn’t go. We talked about his legendary hockey escapades, from stick fights with Larry Zeidel to scoring a Stanley Cup winning goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs.  And of course we got into Eddie’s legendary life off the ice.
"Generations know him for Pop Shoppe so we got into that. Plus we hit on more serious stuff like how he has struggled with not being able to read and write his entire life. Some of the off-ice stuff is hilarious, like the fact Eddie got his driver’s license at 13! I couldn’t believe that.”
Shack's NHL career spanned 17 years and more than 1,000 games with six teams but he was best known for his six and a half seasons with the Leafs in the 1960s. He also played for the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings. Shack, now 82, also spent the final two seasons of his NHL career in Toronto.
“Ken did a great job,” Shack said in a news release. “All the ex-players that helped with book, they were fantastic. I’ve had so many great fans over the years, they made me do the things that I did that are in this book, so I thank them.”
Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito were among the former NHLers who contributed to Eddie Shack - Hockey's Most Entertaining Stories.
Reid has previously published a Denis Maruk biography as well as two books about hockey cards and one on players who appeared in just one NHL game.
