YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Yarmouth Mariners have launched another Pink in the Rink fundraiser in support of the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation on behalf of the Dr. Janke Cancer Centre.
The Mariners were sporting their custom pink jerseys during their home games this past weekend. Bidding on the jerseys is well underway.
People can bid on their favourite player’s jersey by sending a text to 902-748-5691. Bidding will end at 12 noon on Sunday, Nov. 10.
When texting in a bid people are to include their name, the jersey number they are bidding on and their bid. The bids must be a minimum of $10 more than the last posted bid. You can see bid updates on the Mariners Pink in the Rink and Yarmouth Jr A Mariners Facebook pages.
As of Thursday morning, Oct. 17, the total bidding stood at $4,025.
Last year the initiative, which is launched each year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, raised $7,626. In the past three years the fundraiser has raised just over $24,000.
Because there aren’t many October home games, the Mariners will still be wearing the pink jerseys at some of their games in early November.
LAST WEEKEND'S GAMES
While the Mariners hope for another successful Pink in the Rink initiative, they also saw success on the ice during their home games this past weekend. The Yarmouth Mariners had two home wins, although one was closer than they would have liked.
After holding a 4-1 lead over the Amherst Ramblers at the end of two periods in Friday’s game, the visitors came back with three unanswered goals in the third period to tie the game 4-4 and send it into overtime. Yarmouth’s Jonathan Rees, assisted by Daniel Surette and Ian MacDonald, scored the 5-4 game winner at 3:07 in three-on-three overtime.
Other Mariners’ goals earlier in the game had come from Nathan MacMillan, Matt Barron, Ian MacDonald and Sam Gillis.
In net, Justin Sumarah made 29 of 33 saves the Mariners. Yarmouth had 26 shots on Amherst’s net.
The Mariners had more breathing room in their 4-1 win over the Truro Bearcats on Saturday, after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. There was no scoring in the second period with the Mariners and Bearcats each adding a goal in the third.
Scoring for Yarmouth were Sam Gillis with a pair of goals, Kaleb Boudreau and Thomas Hillier.
In net for Yarmouth, Justin Sumarah had 34 saves on 35 shots. The Mariners had 26 shots on Truro’s net.
Despite doubling them on shots on net, Yarmouth had dropped a 4-1 decision to the Valley Wildcats last Thursday night. Yarmouth’s only goal scored by Riley Mayne came with around 5 minutes remaining in the third period. In net for Valley Aaron Brunn stopped 40 of 41 Mariner shots. Valley had 22 shots on net.
At the end of the weekend the Mariners still sat in second place in the Eastlink South division. They were tied in points with the South Shore Lumberjacks at 16 points, but the Jacks have one more win in their season.
Yarmouth is on the road this weekend with games in Miramichi and Campbellton.
