Semi-finals, finals slated for June 1

WINDSOR, N.S. — Rugby fans were treated to a day of stiff competition in Windsor May 31.

The provincial rugby championships for Division 1 and Division 2 high school teams got underway May 31, with games being played at King’s-Edgehill and Avon View high schools. Semi-finals start June 1, with all four championship matches taking place at 3 p.m.

A total of 22 teams took part in the first day of play.

Here’s how the round robin games shook down.

For the Division 1 boys, Avon View triumphed over Eastern Shore 12-8; North Nova defeated Northumberland 17-5; Dartmouth scored a 7-0 victory over Eastern Shore; Northumberland had a close match against Sir John A., winning 10-8; Avon View thumped Dartmouth 43-0; and Sir John A defeated North Nova 15-12.

For the Division 1 girls, Citadel easily handled CEC, winning 34-7; Avon View showed no mercy, blanking Sir John A. 39-0; Lockview also triumphed over Sir John A, allowing the Halifax team just one try for a 33-5 final; Citadel continued its winning ways, defeating North Nova 34-12; Lockview eked out a victory over host Avon View, winning the tight match 7-5; and North Nova defeated CEC in the final game of the day 7-5.

For the Division 2 boys, Cole Harbour blanked Central Kings 24-0 to start the morning off on the right foot; Hants East then posted a 17-5 victory over Glace Bay; Central Kings and Glace Bay were evenly matched when they met on the pitch, recording a 5-5 tie; and Hants East managed a 17-15 victory over Cole Harbour.

For the Division 2 girls, West Kings started the morning by posting a 36-14 victory over Auburn; Dartmouth then doubled Central Kings 10-5; Auburn was victorious over Riverview, recording a 26-19 verdict; Northumberland downed Central Kings 21-14; Riverview made a comeback, defeating West Kings 35-7; and Northumberland scored a lone try to defeat Dartmouth, 5-0.

Heading into play June 1, semi-final games will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and the championship finals will be at 3 p.m.

In Division 1, senior boys’ rugby action, Avon View will take on Sir John A at 11 a.m. at AV and North Nova will face off against Dartmouth at KES to determine which teams will advance to the finals, which will be played at Avon View.

In Division 1, senior girls’ rugby action, Lockview and North Nova will be at Avon View at 11 a.m. and Citadel and Avon View will be butting heads at KES. The championship final will be at Avon View.

In Division 2, boys’ rugby semi-finals, at 9:30 a.m., Central Kings will take on Hants East and Cole Harbour will take on Place Bay, with both games being held at Avon View. The final will be held at KES.

In Division 2, girls’ rugby, at 9:30 a.m., semi-finals will be between Riverview and Dartmouth and Northumberland and West Kings at KES. The winner of each game will play at KES for the gold medal.

In between the semi-finals and finals, there will be a senior men’s Keltic exhibition game at KES at 1 p.m.

There is no admission to watch the games at King's-Edgehill; Avon View is charging admission. Parking is limited at both host sites.
