The Digby Regional High School Mariners won both their Tier II regional qualifiers Oct. 27 and 30 to advance.
Oct. 27 the Mariners met the boys from the Strait Area Education and Recreation Centre from Port Hawkesbury on neutral ground in Truro.
The Mariners scored in the first five minutes and notched another to make it 2-0 going into the second half.
The final score was a convincing 5-1 for Digby.
Logan Bell had two goals for Digby, Owen Titus, Tokio Horie and Paolo Fernandez all had one.
The Mariners second qualifier three days later was against the Amherst Vikings in Amherst.
The Vikings scored first but the officials called on offside on the play and called the goal back.
The Mariners got the first official goal of the game 20 minutes into the second half and then held on for the win. Owen Titus scored the winner and Dawson Acker recorded the shut out.
The Digby boys are headed to New Germany for provincials although the schedule is in doubt now with periods of rain in the forecast for Friday, Nov. 4.
The Mariners were originally scheduled to play Breton Education Centre in their first game at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 4.
“It will be a bit of a ramp up, they’re good. We have to bring our best game on Friday,” said Digby coach Timothy Peck. “After we win our Friday game, I expect all of Digby to descend on New Germany for the gold medal game Saturday.”
Peck says at this level winning is mostly about who digs the deepest.
“It’s about reaching inside and finding it, we did it in Amherst. They had nine subs and we had nobody and still we pulled it off.”
The DRHS Mariners won provincials last year but in Tier III. This year the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation has reorganized the divisions into big (I), medium (II) and small (III) and moved Digby up to Tier II.
“The teams are almost all the same and at this level, every team has some strength, whether it’s speed, endurance, every team has something that gets them to provincials,” says Peck.
