The Newfoundland Growlers, winners of eight of their last 10 games, find themselves first in the North Division standings, second in the Eastern Conference and third overall in the ECHL entering their Christmas break.

The Growlers’ latest victory completed a two-game sweep of the Adirondack Thunder Wednesday night with a 5-3 win at Mile One Centre.

The Growlers won the series-opener Tuesday night over the Thunder by the same 5-3 result.

Wednesday’s victory was the 10th straight at Mile One for the Growlers, and 13th overall at home, which leads all ECHL teams.

Newfoundland sits at 20-10 entering the holiday break.

The Growlers now enjoy an 11-day Christmas break, resuming play Dec. 30-31 against the Worcester Railers at Mile One.

The New Years Eve game starts at 4 p.m.

The Growlers were in a giving mood early Wednesday, allowing the visiting Thunder a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Casey Pierro-Zabotel and recent Yale University graduate Charlie Curti.

The Growlers tied things up in the second when Marcus Power scored the first of his two on the night, and Justin Brazeau potted his 11th of the year.

Scott Pooley, with his 12th on the year, and Power with his 13th scored 22 seconds apart in the third to make it 4-2 for the home team. Adirondack’s Michael Szmatula and Mac Hollowell, into an empty net, traded goals late in the game.
