MIDDLETON, N.S. — Host Middleton Regional High School Monarchs were successful in defending their provincial NSSAF Division 2 Boys Provincial Volleyball title over the weekend Dec. 6 and 7.
On Friday the Monarchs cruised through round-robin action defeating CB Highlands 25-13, 25-11, and South Colchester 25-19, 25-16. With the two wins the Monarchs punched their ticket to the semi-finals on Saturday.
On Saturday, they continued their winning ways dropping Annapolis West 25-17, 25-7 in semi-final action and secured their path to the gold medal game verses Pomquet. The team from Pomquet defeated South Colchester 25-10, 29-27 in the other semi-final and set up what would be a thrilling three-set championship match.
In bronze medal action South Colchester defeated last year’s silver medalists Annapolis West 25-16, 25-20. With the bronze medal game completed in two straight, all eyes turned to the seesaw battle taking place in the gold medal match.
The host Monarchs won the first set 25-21, but the Pomquet Panthers were not about to hand the Monarchs the title as they fought back in the second set handing the Monarchs their first loss of the championship weekend 26-24.
In the third and deciding set, the host Monarchs fell behind early before notching seven straight points to take a commanding 8-4 lead at the switch point of the match. From that point on the Monarchs, rallying behind a large home town crowd, never looked back cruising to a 15-8 victory.
With the win, the Monarchs repeated as Provincial Champions and the future is bright with only two departing grads. Congrats to the well-balanced squad from Middleton.
