SHELBURNE, N.S. – A Shelburne County athlete has been named to a Nova Scotia team that will compete at a national track and field event in Manitoba later this summer.
Taylor Goodick is one of 38 athletes on the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Legion Team that will compete on the Athletics Nova Scotia’s team at the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships being held in August in Brandon, Manitoba.
He is the only athlete in the tri-counties named to the team and will compete in the javelin event.
“My goal is to go out and do my best, hoping to beat my personal best of 54.32 metres,” he says.
Goodick attends Shelburne Regional High School and placed third in provincials in javelin. Last year he set the provincial record in Dartmouth.
To be selected for the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Legion Team, athletes had to have competed at the 2018 Legion Selection Meet. A maximum of two athletes per individual event were selected for the team.
“I’m grateful to have been selected to be part of the N.S. Legion team. I look forward in representing my home province in something I enjoy doing,” Goodick says. “I’m excited to meet some new teammates and hang out with the friends I’ve already made over the years in school sports.”
He says as he trains and competes in the javelin event there is always room for improvement and to learn some new techniques to add to what he already knows. He is always looking to better his performance.
“I have a javelin at home and most nights I go out and throw it in the backyard,” he says. “My mom is always yelling at me to watch where I throw that javelin and to look out for her horse, LOL.”
The track meet in Manitoba runs Aug. 10-12.
The Royal Canadian Legion, through the efforts of thousands of Legion volunteers, has been organizing and coordinating the National Youth Track and Field Championships for more than four decades in support of Canadian youth.
According to the event website, this national championship, funded by the Legion and generous support from our partners, gives young Canadians 17 and under a chance to compete against the best, develop confidence and better understand the diversity of other sports-minded youth across Canada.
