YARMOUTH, N.S. – In advance of this weekend’s MHL midget draft, the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners have announced that they have selected major midget player Ben Charles of Yarmouth as a territorial pick.
Charles was a forward on the UPS South Shore Mustangs major midget team this past hockey season and was also one of three players from the team to be selected for the U16 Hockey Nova Scotia provincial team that competed at the QMJHL Gatorade Excellence Challenge in Quebec this spring.
This past season was Charles’s rookie year with the Mustangs, where he led the team in scoring with 15 goals and 10 assists. Prior to Mustangs, he played two seasons with the Western Hurricanes major bantam team and before that played on rep hockey teams in the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association. He also played on spring hockey teams.
During the MHL playoffs this season the 16-year-old took part in practices with the Yarmouth Mariners as he was tagged as an affiliate with the team.
The MHL's AGM and entry draft will take place June 7-9 in Berwick. The Mariners have 11th pick overall going into the draft.
This year, seven teams MHL made nine total territorial selections. All teams that have made just one selection in the Territorial Round will now receive a compensation pick following the third round of the annual MHL Entry Draft this Saturday. Teams that have made no territorial selections will receive compensation picks following rounds two and three of the Entry Draft.
