YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Yarmouth GPK Refrigeration Peewee A Mariners ended a memorable season Saturday, April 13, capturing the provincial banner with a 9-2 victory over the North Conference champions Pictou County Crushers.

The Mariners came out strong at the Hockey Nova Scotia Day of Champions event held in Truro, jumping to a quick 3-0 lead. Pictou immediately bounced back with two goals to cut the lead to one.

Yarmouth then dug in and never looked back, scoring six unanswered goals to become the first team from Yarmouth ever to earn a Peewee A provincial title.

Game MVP Blake Newell did what he did best all year, notching five goals and adding two assists to lead his team to victory. Other goals came from Lucas Cottreau, Boston Aldred and Ashton Samms who added two. Brady Saulnier was in net for the win and Ben Lyons was awarded most sportsmanlike player for the game.

The Mariners earned their place in the provincial championship by eliminating both the Clare-Digby Ravens and Acadia Axemen in playoff rounds before defeating Sackville 5-0 at the Mariners Centre for the South Conference championship.

The win capped off an unbelievable season for the Mariners who had an overall record of 41-6-2. Along the way the Peewee A Mariners took home four banners – Fall Classic Tournament, Joe Lamontagne Tournament, Hockey NS South Conference Champions and the Hockey NS Provincial Champions.

The parents and players would like to thank coaches Marcel Doucette, Greg Cottreau and Christian Deveau for an amazing year both on and off the ice. As quoted by one parent, “This hockey season is the one when they get older that they’ll talk about, remember every detail and want to relive all over again!”
