One adult and two small children escaped unhurt from a burning car in Ashmore just outside Weymouth on Hwy 1.

Witnesses saw the car, a four-door Intrigue, pull to the side of the road, heading west, about 10:40 a.m.

The car was smoking at that time but soon burst into flame. The flames were concentrated in the front of the vehicle.

The two adults removed the children and their carseats from the back seat and then took shelter in a nearby residence.

Traffic stopped in both directions for about 45 minutes.

The Weymouth Fire Department responded to the call and extinguished what was left of the car.
